Venus and Andromeda (diptych)
Venus and Andromeda are the first paintings in an ongoing self-directed series. I am exploring the overlap between mythology and astronomy, as well as reimagining mythological women from a modern, intersectional feminist perspective. I chose to depict Venus differently than the way she is depicted in classical art, to challenge historical standards of beauty. Likewise, I portrayed Andromeda, traditionally a damsel in distress, as a woman capable of fighting her own monsters. This series combines several things I am passionate about—astronomy, mythology, and feminism—and I consider these to be some of my best works so far.
